Golden Planet: Work In Progress

An early concept for the album artwork for Golden Planet by Phantasmagoria.

Will have to redo the art because the photoshop file became corrupted on my laptop. 

I recently finished recording the guitar tracks for the album. I think the album will sound half way decent once completed.

Here is a sneak peek at one of the songs as a work in progress. There is no bass parts yet, and it still needs to be cleaned up.

Painting Update

As previously stated, I still plan on completing a goal through out the summer of painting roughly 40 small panels based on direct observation. Although I have only completed two so far, I found out early on that when my attention is divided between two intense projects I am unable to accomplish either one very efficiently. I plan on meeting my goal by the end of the summer.

Summer Goal

As far as oil painting is concerned for over the summer, I will attempt roughly three paintings a week based on observation. In addition I will work on several other projects including the completion of my bands long awaited farewell album.

Year One Complete... Kinda

Still Works in Progress

I still have a lot of work to do on these paintings. I received my final committee review today and had some informative feedback, most of which I was more or less aware of. However I was told that I need to add some sort of resin (Gamvar, Damar Varnish) into my glazing mixture in order for the paintings to dry properly and to actually work as a real "glaze." 

I will be taking a month off from these paintings in order to acquire some fresh eyes when I decide to resolve the work. I will also begin to add in some resin into the mixture. 

Several session study that is rather lame. 

Last two hour figure session for the year. The torso is elongated and shoulder is a little odd.

Robots!

A small quick study from the window in my studio. 

Although I like the way the painting turned out, it does not reflect the mood of the scenario I was attempting to depict. When I was painting this scene, it began to snow in Edinboro, which is why I was inside.

All of these paintings need some serious work. The main complaint or suggestions that I've received is the lack of color / saturation with in the work. Since I am working with glazing technique I'm attempting to slowly build up the color with very thin layers of color. 

As a note I have some drawing errors in the work... I also realize I have a very long way to go before achieving the final product that I envision with this body of work. Hopefully by doing more I'll come to some sort of conclusion with the work.

I created this video as part of my assistantship. Sometimes it's nice to work with a different medium such as video. 

Nearing the end of the grisaille! 

Figure drawings from last Friday. The model was unable to hold the standing pose so we did two roughly one hour sessions. 

Painting... is hard!

Location of a plein air study.

The result of the study. This painting failed miserably. My professor has coined a term MSB: Murky Shit Brown.  I tried to paint in the shade, and I felt like I was consistently second guessing myself. Must do more! 

To try and redeem my earlier attempt at painting, I decided to do a study of the undergraduate studio. I'm actually kind of happy with this one. It is obviously not perfect by any means but I think it's heading in the right direction. 

I did spend around five hours on this study, and there was consistent lighting, and good conversation. 

Painting! About an hour an half study. The light changed a lot on this painting from when I started, which explains the difference between the painting and what's seen in the photograph. I would still get moments with intense sunlight so I decided to keep that initial scheme. This may have undermined the quality of the final study.

Also on a side note, I was charged by a ground hog while working on this painting. I was unaware that I was around an entrance to his home. I love being around ducks, geese, and ground hogs while painting. It would be difficult to do anything more enjoyable.

Paint!

Nice Weather for Ducks!

I went out side and painted again, but this time in the shade / gazebo by the lake. In addition to help with my values, the gazebo kept me relatively dry. However...

The painting got rained on in transit from my easel to the car. Little did I know that the drops of rain would begin to remove the paint. So I unfortunately had to touch up the painting back in the studio. Luckily I was able to just use the paint I already had mixed on my palette to touch up the over all painting. 

I began to block in the general color for this painting last night. Instead of working monochromatically, I wanted to block in the general color for each area and than tweak it with more comprehensive passes in the future.
